ALASKA AFTERSCHOOL NETWORK
The Alaska Afterschool Network is a program of Alaska Children’s Trust, and as such, our missions are tied.
Mission
Support, strengthen and advocate for quality afterschool programs and activities for children, youth, and families throughout Alaska.
Research shows that afterschool programs:
increase student’s attendance
increase grades and graduation rates
decrease expulsions
increase self-esteem causing a reduction in suicide
support working families by providing children and youth with a safe place to go in the hours after school
give children and youth opportunities for exercise
Investing in our youngest generation safeguards their well-being today and assures their future success and the success of Alaska as a whole.
Afterschool programs provide children and youth with a safe place to go in the hours after school, taking the burden off working parents and caregivers and giving them peace of mind that their children are in good hands.
Afterschool programs have the strongest impact on decreasing the odds of a youth engaging in risky behaviors like alcohol consumption or crime. Plus, afterschool programs give children and youth access and friendship with additional trusted adults, a key Strengthening Families Protective Factor against child abuse and neglect and quality afterschool programs encourage and provide for positive childhood experiences that can buffer the impacts of adverse childhood experiences.
